The drape affair
Subtraction Pattern Cutting
Subtraction pattern cutting is a technique developed by Julian Roberts which combines pattern drafting and draping considering the negative space. It does not follow the usual principles of pattern drafting. There are three different sub techniques out of which the tunnel technique was used for this project. In this a tunnel is made by placing two sheets of fabric with three sides stitched. The bodices are traced onto this and connected using curved lines at the side seam. The negative space then formed
between the bodices and the lines are then cut off. The side seams of the
remaining part is stitched and draped on to a mannequin to form a garment.
Two contrast coloured cotton fabrics with identical prints, golden buttons and zippers are used in the construction of this multi-drapeable garment.
The multiple drapes are facilitated with the use of buttons and buttonholes. The garment also has a hidden pocket.
